The easiest answer is MONEY!! What does it mean to “Book Direct”? Booking Direct means, you reserve your room directly on the lodging property website. It is very easy to assume you are on the lodging property website. The OTA (Online Travel Agencies) want you to make your reservation on their website. An example of an OTA is Booking.com, Expedia.com, Hotels.com, etc. The OTA’s, of course, have a much larger advertising budget than a small locally owned property. So, it is highly likely when you look for a property, the OTA’s will be listed first on your google searches. When you book thru an OTA, the property pays the OTA a percentage of the cost of the reservation. In our case, Green Tree Inn pays 21% of the cost of the reservation to the OTA. Yes, that is correct, every time you book a room thru an OTA, we pay 21%. In order to offset this high cost, we raise the rates that are available to the OTA’s. So, not only does the guest pay more but we get to keep less. So, why do we utilize the OTA’s? Some guests are comfortable and familiar or have their own favorite OTA. Now I am going to discuss items to consider when choosing a Bed and Breakfast and why you should choose Green Tree Inn of Elsah as your getaway destination. First of all, consider the location. Are you looking for a quite place to relax and rejuvenate or are you looking for a place with lots of things to see and do? Great news, Green Tree Inn offers both!! We are located 4 miles from Grafton, IL which features wineries, restaurants, zip lining, hiking, boating, water park and great views of the Mississippi. We are located 10 miles from Alton, IL which features wonderful restaurant options, microbrewery, tons of history (including ghost tours) and shopping. St. Louis, MO is 45 minutes away. So, you can take in a baseball or hockey game, visit the zoo, the botanical gardens or one of many museums. There really is something for everyone. Return to the Village of Elsah. The entire village is on the historic register. It is great place to stroll and enjoy the architecture of the village as well as the peacefulness. I think everyone can agree that 2020 has been a year full of lemons so I decided to make lemonade. Our business has been severely affected by the pandemic. Without guests to take care of, it seemed like the perfect time to finish my cookbook that was started several years ago. I had a dream of organizing all the recipes that I had accumulated over my many years of cooking. I had recipes on backs of deposit slips, backs of pizza orders and papers that were stained from use over the years. I had recipes from my grandmothers, my mom, aunts, family and friends. There were many cookbooks that I had purchased from Bed and Breakfast that Gary and I had visited when owning our own Bed and Breakfast was still a pipe dream. I finally had the time to sit down and get the recipes typed and proofed. Then I decided I wanted my cookbook to be more personal. I wanted my granddaughters to have my memories associated with family recipes. All laundry is clean, folded and put away. Homemade cookies are baked and on the table waiting for guests. 9:30 P.M. – Guest start arriving. Still trying to get an exact count on how many to expect for breakfast. Visit with guests and get everyone settled in for the evening. **Friday** 5:30 A.M. – Alarm goes off. Breakfast needs to be prepared for 17 and ready to serve at 8:00 A.M. 8:00 A.M. – Breakfast of fresh fruit with yogurt, wake up casserole, homemade blueberry sour cream bread is served, along with numerous pots of coffee. Three of our guests are children, so a batch of homemade pancakes and sausage links are included for the kids to eat. 11:30 A.M. – Kitchen is cleaned, floor mopped, dining room cleaned and 1st of 4 loads of dishes is in the dishwasher. Go to start washer only to realize there is NO POWER in the utility room. Gary is an electrician (Thank goodness) so he starts working on the problem. 12:00 Noon – Start cleaning rooms for guests that have requested early check in. 1:30 P.M. – Finish cleaning room and return to kitchen to find Gary has the electrical panel open in the kitchen. Our guests have the kitchen counter covered with lunch making food and snacks. The kitchen, dining room, great room is full of guests and their family preparing to attend wedding. Make coffee, get lint brush, zip dress for mother of the groom, generally visit and take care of guests until they leave for wedding. 4:00 P.M. – Clean additional room, change sheets and new towels for 3rd room. Re-clean dining room, start dishwasher again, start washer. Bake cookies. 5:30 P.M. – take power nap 6:00 P.M. – clean other guest room. Also work on loading and unloading dishwasher, washer and dryer. 9:00 P.M. – Find recipes for tomorrow mornings breakfast. Fall into bed. **Saturday:** 5:30 A.M. – Alarm goes off. Breakfast needs to be prepared for 8 people. 8:00 A.M. – Breakfast is ready to be served. Today we are serving Blueberry/Pineapple/Oatmeal pancakes, sausage links and fresh fruit and yogurt. After the 8 folks are served, 5 additional family members arrive for breakfast. 9:00 A.M. – Frantically make food for additional 5 people. Serve additional breakfast and visit with guests. Start dishwasher. 11:00 A.M. – Guests leave. Clean kitchen and dining room. Start washer and dryer. Start cleaning guest rooms. Four new couples are checking in later this afternoon. The rest of the day is spent checking in guests, answering the phone with additional reservations, loading and unloading the dishwasher, washer and dryer and finishing cleaning and preparing the rooms for the new guests. 8:00 P.M. – Sit down to relax and think about the breakfast menu. **Sunday:** 5:30 A.M. – Alarm goes off. Breakfast needs to be prepared for 9 folks. One couple has requested breakfast at 8:00 a.m. The remaining guests have requested breakfast at 9:30. I don’t want to hold the foods from the 8:00 breakfast for over one hour so 2 different breakfasts are needed. 8:00 A.M. – Serve first couple breakfast of Eggs in a Basket, Peach/Blueberry upside down pancakes with fresh fruit and yogurt. 9:30 A.M. – Breakfast of hash brown quiche filled with fresh vegetables, Canadian bacon; blueberry sour cream bread and fresh fruit and yogurt is served to remaining 7 guests. Then I get a chance to sit and visit with our guests!! 11:00 A.M. Guests check out and cleaning of kitchen, dining room and dishes begin. 1:00 P.M. – Take a nap We take the evening off to have dinner with our daughter and granddaughter. Then it is off to Kohl’s to get a new vacuum cleaner, and some additional items needed for the Inn. For some folks, this may not sound like fun. But now that I have had an opportunity to be an Innkeeper, I can’t imagine going back to work in an office setting. I’m not going to lie, being an Innkeeper is hard work and some days are long. But when you get to be part of a family making memories, meet new people, and see someone’s smile when they are served a delicious breakfast, it is all worthwhile. Nothing makes me happier than seeing families and guests making themselves at home and enjoying the Inn. I feel very blessed to be living out my dream of being an Innkeeper. Being an Innkeeper is all and more than I thought it would be. I look forward to the day when the Inn is financially successful enough that Gary can quit his job as an electrician and be with me at the Inn all week. But we greatly enjoyed all the guests who chose to stay with us. It gave me a chance to try some new recipes. Trying new recipes is always exciting to me because you never know when you will find a new recipe that is a great hit. One recipe that I tried earlier this winter was poached pears. It has been a huge hit with the guests and has even been mentioned in some of our reviews on bedandbreakfast.com. But I guess adding butter and cream to anything just makes it better! We took advantage of the slower time to do our Spring cleaning. Everything has been deep cleaned and Gary has completed repainting two of the guest rooms. A fresh coat of paint always makes everything look so clean and nice. We also attended our first IBBA (Illinois Bed and Breakfast Association) conference in Springfield, IL. It was so nice to spend time with folks that have the same interest in providing great hospitality to guests. We learned a lot and left with our heads full of new ideas to continue to grow and improve Green Tree Inn. We just finished a great weekend with a full house of folks here for Parents Weekend at Principia College. It is always such a pleasure to host Principia guests as well as have a full house. I love to see folks enjoy a great home cooked meal. Now that the weather is finally getting nicer and things are turning green and starting to bloom, we are hopeful to have a full house every weekend. This is a picture of two of the Pileated Woodpeckers that Gary had an opportunity to watch multiple times this summer. If you have never seen a Pileated Woodpecker, they are the size of a crow and very impressive. If you want to be guaranteed to have a up close and personal look at a Pileated Woodpecker, be sure to visit the Tree House Wild Life located just 4 miles from Green Tree Inn. The village is also home to multiple deer who like to graze in the open field behind the Inn, as well as our garden. You will also have the opportunity to hear the frogs chirping in our “frog pond” located directly across from the Inn. As well as our multiple owls hooting. Gary is kept busy feeding the birds in the garden in the winter as well as the hummingbirds in the summer. They flew into Chicago and rented Harley’s to tour the United States for five weeks. Their English was very limited so we invited our German speaking neighbors to join us for breakfast. We enjoyed getting to know them thru the translator. We were very happy to receive this picture and e-mail after they returned to Switzerland stating they had made it home safely. When we purchased the Inn, I was not expecting that we would have the opportunity to host so many International travelers. We have had guests from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, UK, Australia and China just to name a few. The decorating begins the first week in November and is completed in time for the Holiday Open House Tour that is the first Saturday in December every year. This year included five Christmas trees, a decorated garden, our own village and lots of snowmen. Gary and I started collecting St. Nicholas Square Villages from Kohl’s in 1998. Little did we know that 14 years later, we would actually be living in a village. I enjoy setting up “our” village and sharing with all our guests and visitors from the Holiday Open House Tour. Normally our kitchen is decorated with our chickens. During the holiday season, all the chickens are packed up and replaced with my snowman collection. Then we end up with wrapping all the porches on the Inn with garland and lights. When you see Gary, please be sure to tell him THANK YOU for carrying all the boxes to and from the basement. Since he does not share my enthusiasm for decorating EVERYTHING, it would be great to let him know his effort is appreciated. The Holiday Open House Tour happens every year the first Saturday in December. This year 12 historic homes here in the village opened their homes for the tour. No matter how many times I have an opportunity to see an Eagle soaring over the mighty Mississippi, it always makes me smile. This time of year watch for cars pulled over on the side of the Great River Road that is a sure sign an Eagle has been spotted. Keep your eyes peeled because you don’t know if you will see an Eagle sitting in a tree, flying over the river, riding a hunk of ice down the Mississippi or all of the above. The Alton CVB has a great website: [www.visitalton.com](http://www.visitalton.com/). It shows the locations of the weekly Eagle sightings as well as upcoming events to see Eagles up close and personal. This would be a great time to start a family tradition of taking a winter drive down the Great River Road. There are lots of great spots in Grafton to stop and get a bite to eat while you keep an eye on the Mississippi. Some restaurants even offer spotting scopes for guests to use. Make it a full weekend and spend the night at Green Tree Inn. Just ask, and we will be happy to let you borrow our binoculars. Be sure to bring your camera. Maybe you will be lucky and see an Eagle while eating breakfast. A delicious home cooked breakfast and the opportunity to see an Eagle out the window sounds like a great memory. Helpful hint: The Eagles are easier to spot if you are driving the River Road towards Alton from Grafton. Contra dancing consists of dances like the Virginia Reel and dates back to Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. What better place to learn and participate in Contra Dancing than Farley’s Music Hall in Historic Elsah? Contra Dancing is held at 7:00 p.m. at Farley’s Music Hall the 2nd Saturday of every month. The next dance will be the Jane Austen Ball on Saturday, April 9 from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $6.00 per person. Gary and I have been able to attend a few of these dances. Even with my two left feet, I have had a great time. Here are some pictures of the March Contra Dance that Gary and I attended with some of our guests. It is a great way to meet new people and get some exercise. Everyone is very nice and welcomes folks that have no prior experience in Contra Dancing. Take a Ride on the Hakuna Matata The Hakuna Matata is a 49-passenger tour boat that can take you on a wonderful adventure on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. It is an all-weather, 53-foot, 49-passenger Coast Guard licensed tour boat. There are seating areas and cafe tables on both the upper and the lower decks. The first level of the boat is fully enclosed with large windows. The upper deck is a huge open air patio offering 360-degree views of the river, bluffs, islands and historical points of interest along the way making it perfect for nature photography and family photos. The cruise is made even more comfortable as the boat has restrooms and the TIKI BAR offering a cash bar and light snacks.
