Contra Dancing is a combination of folk dancing and square dancing, which is danced in a line instead of a square. Contra dancing consists of dances like the Virginia Reel and dates back to Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. What better place to learn and participate in Contra Dancing than Farley’s Music Hall in Historic Elsah? Contra Dancing is held at 7:00 p.m. at Farley’s Music Hall the 2nd Saturday of every month. The next dance will be the Jane Austen Ball on Saturday, April 9 from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $6.00 per person.
Gary and I have been able to attend a few of these dances. Even with my two left feet, I have had a great time. Here are some pictures of the March Contra Dance that Gary and I attended with some of our guests. It is a great way to meet new people and get some exercise. Everyone is very nice and welcomes folks that have no prior experience in Contra Dancing. So don’t let lack of experience stop you from attending. Each dance starts with a slow walk thru of the dance and then the caller and the live band begin. It is a great way to spend an evening. Feel free to attend alone or with a group of friends.
